When I hitch a ride on a space ship or walk through that dimensional gate, I expect to be transported to exotic new lands, drenched in colors and odors that have me weeping in awe or gagging in disgust. I want to drown myself in these new sights and sounds and learn everything about these new “people.” Are they blue or bejeweled? How many limbs do they have? Will their body odor switch on a human libido or send it comatose with its toxicity? How do they love?

In my newest release, the science fiction romance, Race to Redemption (Green Rising, Book #1), I introduce a new species Karamites. What is unique about them is they look like their observer. A blonde haired, blue eyed, stocky human would see a blonde-haired, blue eyed, stocky human. A six armed, green skinned Martian would see a six armed, green skinned Martian. This novel anatomy allows me to do two fun things. On one hand, I can Karamites as the ultimate spies, because no two people would see the same thing, making them virtually impossible to identify. On the other hand, they reveal a lot about romance and how we choose and see our partners.

Thank about it for a second. A Karamite looks unique to you. I believe we see the people we love through unique eyes. As we grow to love them, we tend to really focus on the distinct aspects—physical and emotional—that make them, them. So, when talking about our partners and spouses, it’s those little things that make them so sexy and special. The idea of Karamites allows me to take that idea, and push it a further.

Moreover, I also believe to love others we have to love ourselves first. And aliens that look like us is that little reminder of that.

Finally, when looking for a partner, I also believe we do look for something of ourselves in those we love. Maybe not physically, but we do look.

I must confess that in Race to Redemption I only introduce the Karamites, so they remain secondary to the main story. But in the Green Rising series, I do have a love story planned for Xan (Race’s resident Karamite).
